Wet-Plate Collodion Portraits & other Commissions

The Central Valley Project is known for its numerous Wet-Plate Collodion Portraits in private and commissioned settings.
Das nasse Kollodium-Verfahren geht zurueck bis in das Jahr 1851 und ist bekannt fuer ein nahezu kornloses Detail und einen aussergewoehnlich hohen Kontrastumfang. Da der Prozess zur Herstellung einer Kollodium-Fotografie, einer Ambrotypie oder Tintypie (Kollodiumfotografien uaf einem Traeger aus Glas oder Metall) kein Negative involviert, handelt es sich bei den erzeugten Aufnahmen um fotografische Unikate.
To create an ambrotype, a meticulously cleaned glass plate is coated with iodides and bromides suspended in a viscous collodion solution. The plate is then immersed in a silver bath, and after a number of minutes, the resulting light sensitive plate is exposed in camera; however, as the name suggests, the plate must be exposed (and developed) while still wet. The plate is immediately developed by hand, cleared (“fixed”) in cyanide, and varnished with a mixture of tree resin and lavender oil to protect the image. It is finally dried over an open flame.
Zur Herstellung einer Ambrotypie wird eine gruendlich gereinigte Glasplatte mit einer dickfluessigen Kollodiumloesung, die Kaliumjodid und Bromsalze enthaelt, uebergossen. Die Glasplatte wird anschliessend in ein Silberbad eingetaucht. Nach einigen Minuten wird die dabei entstandene lichtempfindliche Platte in der Kamera belichtet. Wie schon der Name andeutet, ist die Glasplatte zu belichten waehrend sie noch nass ist. Die Platte wird sogleich in einer Eisenloesung entwickelt, fixiert und zum Schutze der Abbildung mit einer Mischung aus Baumsaft und Lavendeoel gefirnisst. Sie wird letzendlich ueber einer offenen Flamme getrocknet.

With due care, ambrotypes can be passed down through the generations. Schedule your portrait at Berlin's only "Skylight Studio." A sitting in this natural light studio (compared to the glare of a bank of artificial light bulbs (used in most all other photographic studios), natural light provides an unmatched experience for the sitter) includes a historically-sized ambrotype created on art glass. Ambrotypes are the chosen medium in the Studio, as they exhibit an exceptional depth in the shadows when compared to tintypes. Glass negatives for printing (on albumen, salted paper, or black & white paper) can also be made. High quality digital files (scans) of portraits are available upon request allowing later printing of your choice.

Eine Sitzung in unserem natuerlich belichteten Atelier umfasst eine oder mehrere historische Ambrotypien auf einem Traeger aus hochwertigem Glas. Im Vergleich zur Beleuchtung mit kuentslichem Licht, welches fast allen anderen fotografischen Studios verwendet wird, bietet natuerliches Licht eine unvergleichlich angenehme Atmosphaere fuer den Portraetierten. CVP bietet Ambrotypien als Medium an, da sich diese, im Vergleich zu Tintypien, durch eine ausgesprochen hohe Schattentiefe auszeichnen. Negative auf Glas, zur Reproduktion auf historischem Albumin oder Salzpapier, koennen ebenfalls gefertig werden. Qualitativ hochwertige digitale Dateien (Scans) werden auf Wunsch erstellt. Von den Aufnahmen koennen dann spaeter beliebig Kopien auf herkoemmlichem Fotopapier erstellt werden.

or 1 - "full plate" (6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; 16.5 x 21.5 cm).
Auftraege werden fuer private und kommerzielle Zwecke entgegengenommen. Kollodium-Negative auf Glas werden erstellt und in historischen Verfahren vervielfaeltigt.
